Ranchi University was established on July 12, 1960 as an autonomous institution. Earlier, it was part of the Bihar University. Initially, the university offered only 10 postgraduate departments, one constituent college and 20 affiliated colleges. Presently, the university has 22 postgraduate departments, 19 constituent colleges and 47 affiliated colleges. It is a state public university which is situated in Ranchi, Jharkhand. The university has been recognised by UGC. It is a member of AIU and has been accredited by NAAC with a “B+” grade. 

The campus of Ranchi University is spread over an area of 71 acres. There are a total of 3 hostels available at the campus of the university for both male and female students. There are a variety of facilities available at the university campus such as a plagiarism detection cell, ICT facilities, e-library, hostels, banking, 24*7 WiFi connectivity, sports complex, computer centre and more. Along with this, there is a dedicated placement cell at the university to provide students with job opportunities in reputed companies. 

There are a total of 175 faculty members at the university and 7126 students were registered with the university in the academic year 2022-23. The university has also produced reputed alumni in various sectors of society such as Babulal Marandi (Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a prominent political leader), Narendra Kohli (Hindi writer and recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award), Ram Dayal Munda (Renowned tribal activist, educationist, and Padma Shri awardee), Neera Yadav (Former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh), Kariya Munda (Former Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha and a respected tribal leader) and more.

Ranchi University courses are offered to candidates in the stream of science, law, commerce, humanities, engineering, management and more. The university offers a total of 13 courses in 100+ UG, PG, doctoral, and diploma specialisations. Some of the popular courses offered by the university are B.Tech, B.Sc, MA, M.Sc, MBBS, MBA, LLM MCA, etc. BBA LLB is an integrated course which is available at the university for a duration of 5 years. Ranchi University fees range from Rs 2,100 to Rs 1,50,000 (annually) for the courses available at the university. 

Ranchi University admissions for academic session 2024 are going to start soon. The university accepts various entrance exams for admission. For instance, CUET UG is the basis for admission to BA, B.Sc., B.Com. and other UG courses; JEE Main scores are accepted for admission to B.Tech courses. The performance of candidates in the CUET PG is the basis for admission to M.Sc., MA, M.Com. & more PG courses. In addition, GATE score is acceptable for admission to M.Tech programmes. For admission to MBBS/BDS, NEET UG score is accepted and NEET PG score is accepted for admission to MD/MS courses. The qualifying score in CAT, MAT, CMAT, and ATMA are used for admission to MBA courses.

Ranchi University scholarships are offered to the meritorious as well as economically backward students of the university. To avail the scholarships, interested candidates must meet the minimum eligibility criteria set by the university. The university offers many national as well as state - level scholarships to the students. 

National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students

This scholarship is provided by Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India for financial assistance for meritorious ST students for pursuing higher education. It supports students who are pursuing UG, PG, M.Phil and PhD degree from the Indian universities.

Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships for College and University Students

It is a merit-cum-means scholarship programme which is offered by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. A sum of Rs 12,000 per year is given for undergraduate studies (first three years). A total of Rs 20,000 per year is given for postgraduate students. And up to Rs 20,000 per year is provided for the students of fourth and fifth year of professional courses.

Ranchi University UG courses include programmes from the fields of engineering, science, arts, medicine, education and law. Some of the popular undergraduate programmes available at Ranchi University are BA Anthropology, BA English, BA Geography, B.Tech CSE, B.Tech Metallurgy, B.Sc Chemistry, B.Sc Biotechnology and more. Other than these programmes, the university also offers integrated programmes like BBA LLB.

The fees for the undergraduate courses at Ranchi University range between Rs 2,100 to Rs 89,252 annually (approx) depending on the chosen course. The course duration at the Ranchi University ranges between 1 to 5.5 years. The duration of the BBA LLB integrated course is 5 years. 

Ranchi University PG courses are offered to the interested candidates in the stream of arts, commerce, science, engineering, management, law, medicine & surgery and more. Some of the popular PG courses available at Ranchi University are MA Philosophy, MA Political Science, M.Com, M.Tech Environmental Engineering, M.Tech Manufacturing Engineering, MD Psychiatry, MS, M.Sc Geology, M.Sc Zoology, MBA, MCA and more. 

The duration of the MA, M.Sc, M.Com, MBA, MCA, etc. courses is 2 years but the duration of the MD & MS courses is 3 years. The annual fee structure for the PG courses at Ranchi University ranges between Rs 4,818 and Rs 1,50,000 (approx).

Campus life

The campus life at the university is very happening. The canteen is one of the busiest places on campus. We can get a variety of cuisines here that are prepared hygienically every day. The central library of the university has more than 90000 textbooks, 10000 reference books, and nearly 350 theses for PhD. There is also a fully operational INFLIBNET facility (connected through a dedicated lease line to INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmadabad) which makes the library a happening place. 

Sports life

The sports complex of Ranchi University comprises of basketball court, volleyball court, ground to play football and cricket and more. The students participate in various competitions at zonal, district, state and national levels regularly. 

Hostel life

There are 2 boys' hostels and 1 girl’s hostel at the Ranchi University. The capacity of the boy’s hostels is 210 and the capacity of girl’s hostel is 60. The rooms are available for single and triple sharing. Residential facilities for the faculty members and non-teaching members are also available at the university.
